Vox Rea: The Noir-Pop Duo Blending Music, Philosophy, and Art

There’s a certain kind of music that doesn’t just sound good, it feels like a story. Vox Rea, the creative force of sisters Kate and Lauren Kurdyak, is exactly that. Their sound moves like a dream, somewhere between folk, noir-pop, and cinematic poetry. But more than just music, Vox Rea is a statement and a reclaiming of identity, emotion, and artistic control.
Before Vox Rea, the duo performed as The Katherines, releasing their debut album To Bring You My Heart in 2017 with 604 Records. That chapter brought them over a million Spotify streams, landed them on major playlists like New Music Friday and Hot Hits Canada, and placed their songs in series such as Orphan Black and The Order. The media picked up fast VICE, MTV, the Vancouver Sun and so did their audience.
Then, something shifted. They took a step back, left the industry treadmill, and studied philosophy in the mountains. What came next was Vox Rea, a new name, a new voice and a whole new way of doing things. No more playing roles or fitting industry boxes. Vox Rea became a vessel for truth, contradiction, introspection. Their music explores themes like addiction, grief, lust, identity, self-doubt and independence, not from a distance, but from within.
Their debut as Vox Rea is lush, layered, and emotionally rich. Strings swell, voices harmonize, and every lyric feels like a confession. Tracks like “Dose Me Up” and “Damn (Unstuck)” not only gained editorial support but were included in Spotify’s Top Folk Songs of 2021. Their collaborators include some of Canada’s finest Luca Fogale, Begonia, Joël, and producers Connor Seidel, Tim Buron, Derek Hoffman, and Joel Stouffer. But everything still feels personal, handmade, and grounded in the sisters’ shared vision.
What makes Vox Rea so magnetic isn’t just the music, it’s the complete artistic world they build around it. They direct their own videos and short films, they design their own visuals, and they create merchandise that’s as conceptual as it is wearable, thanks to collaborations with Dutch artist Maud van Baar de Knegt. This isn’t just a band, it’s an artist collective. One that believes in experience over product, reflection over perfection.
Their performances have taken them around the world, from SXSW and Reeperbahn to The Great Escape, Tallinn Music Week, and Treefort Music Fest. Supported by CreativeBC, the Canada Council for the Arts, and RBCxMusic’s First Up Program, Vox Rea continues to grow their impact as an independent artist project that resonates beyond borders.
Their new LP Art Oracles is the latest expression of their sonic and emotional universe. With every release, they invite listeners deeper into their world, one shaped by reflection, rebellion, and radical honesty.
Vox Rea isn’t chasing trends. They’re creating timeless soundtracks for those who crave depth, connection, and art that matters.
