Budapest is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most enchanting cities, where the majestic Danube divides the historic Buda from the vibrant Pest. Scenic bridges, stunning architecture, and breathtaking views make this destination a must-visit. With Alexandra, our local guide and member of the NZIRIA association, our city tour was transformed into an authentic, immersive experience exploring the beauty and culture of Hungary.
Day 1: A Warm Welcome and Stunning Evening Views
After a short direct flight from Naples, we easily made our way to the city center with the efficient E100 shuttle. Our meeting point was Ferec Tér, where Alexandra was eagerly waiting for us. The excitement was contagious as our adventure began immediately with an evening stroll along the Pest side of the Danube, crossing the stunning Chain Bridge. The atmosphere was vibrant, with lights reflecting off the water and the city streets buzzing with life.
The evening wasn’t just about sightseeing, it was also a culinary delight. Alexandra welcomed us to her family home, where she had prepared a traditional Hungarian dinner. We enjoyed Pelecz soup, a tasty dish of yellow beans, and Töltött Káposzta, stuffed cabbage filled with meat and topped with a rich tomato sauce. The authentic flavors made us feel right at home, more like old friends than visitors.
Day 2: St. Stephen’s Day Celebrations and Iconic Sights
The second day of our trip coincided with St. Stephen’s Day, Budapest’s most important celebration. The morning kicked off with a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in Heroes’ Square, a remarkable museum housing one of Europe’s most impressive collections of European art, including masterpieces by artists like Rembrandt and Caravaggio.
Next, we hopped on a bus toward the Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church in the Buda district. We spent the morning enjoying panoramic views and indulging in a typical Hungarian treat, the kürtőskalács, also known as chimney cake, with its signature sweet and crisp outer layer. In the afternoon, we headed to one of the trendy Biergarten pubs where we savored a Classic Burger made with a traditional Hungarian recipe, paired with a refreshing local pilsner. The crisp and balanced flavors of the beer perfectly complemented the burger.
After lunch, in the late afternoon, we joined the St. Stephen’s Day festival festivities along the Danube, participating in one of the event celebrations before the fireworks show in honor of St. Stephen. The grand finale of the day featured fireworks launched simultaneously from various points across the city, creating a spectacular light show reflecting in the Danube, truly a breathtaking sight.
Day 3: Modern Art and Relaxation at the Baths
On the third day in Budapest, we immersed ourselves in the world of modern art with a visit to the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art. Here, we were captivated by an extraordinary collection of works by international artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and talented contemporary Hungarian artists. Every exhibit was a journey into creative expression and cultural reflection.
After this artistic immersion, we took a tram to the city center, then hopped on the iconic tram n°2, which offers a stunning ride along the Pest side of the Danube, with unforgettable views of the Parliament Building. Despite the heat of 32°C, we couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the majestic sight of this architectural wonder.
To recharge, we stopped for lunch to enjoy a classic Hungarian gulash with rice flavors that truly represent the essence of Hungarian cuisine. After lunch, we couldn’t resist taking a commemorative photo with our NZIRIA Card at Luna Tour, a final snapshot that made us smile.
In the afternoon, we headed to the famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths, one of the largest thermal complexes in Europe, located in Városliget Park. We soaked in the warm, mineral-rich waters, rejuvenating ourselves after an intense morning. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the unique beauty and charm of Budapest.
Adjacent to the baths is the Vajdahunyad Castle, a fairy-tale-like complex that felt straight out of a storybook. Walking through the Gothic towers, Renaissance courtyards and Romanesque details, we were transported back in time, experiencing the magic of Budapest’s architectural treasures.
